If you are unemployed or on a low income, you may qualify for Legal Aid which will cover the cost of your mediation. The mediator and yourself will assess your eligibility for Legal Aid at your initial assessment meeting.
If you are not eligible for legal aid but your ex partner is, your introductory appointment and your first mediation session will be free. You will only need to pay for your second and subsequent appointments.
If you and your ex partner are not eligible for legal aid York Family Mediation Service currently charges the following per person:
This introductory session can either be an individual one or a joint one. You can find out about mediation and what it can offer, and then you can make an informed decision as to whether you wish to proceed to mediation or not. Both you and your partner will need to attend an intake appointment before mediation can start. The charge covers the cost of the referral and the appointment.
If you are planning to go to Court in order to sort out arrangements post separation, you now need to show that you have tried to resolve matters through mediation. It is expected that the applicant will have attended a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting). If mediation does not help you resolve matters and you still want to make an application to court we will issue you with an FM1 form which is required to accompany any application to court.
We have a sliding scale of charges for mediation sessions; each Child only Mediation session lasts an hour and each All Issues Mediation and Finance and Property session last 1½ hours. Your mediator will assess with you which income band you fall into at your intake appointment.

York Family Mediation Service is a small independent registered charity. We receive grants, but these fall short of our rising costs. We appreciate it if clients pay their charges promptly.
